19 may 2025 mk2 Films to Represent Jean Rouch Titles Worldwide

Cannes, 18 May 2025 – Paris-based international sales company mk2 Films has signed a worldwide representation deal (excluding North America and Spain) with Les Films du Jeudi, bringing the works of French director Jean Rouch to the global audience.

This first agreement between the two companies covers a treasure trove of films from Jean Rouch, a groundbreaking French filmmaker who merged anthropology with cinema, pioneering cinéma vérité. Working with renowned producer Pierre Braunberger, he bridged French and West African cultures, redefining documentary as a deeply human, artistic form. His approach—using lightweight cameras, spontaneous filming, and collaborative storytelling—broke with traditional ethnographic distance, creating a radically new and immersive way of capturing reality on screen.

The deal between mk2 Films and Les Films du Jeudi notably includes restored versions of Jean Rouch’s features I, a Black (1957), The Human Pyramide (1959), as well as short films, such as controversial The Mad Masters (1955).

Founded in 1964, Les Films du Jeudi manages the oeuvre of visionary producer Pierre Braunberger, whose prolific output spans nearly a century. The collection encompasses over 111 feature films, 165 documentaries and 130 shorts—featuring works by cinematic luminaries such as Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, and Chris Marker, so people can enjoy, and if you’re a film enthusiast and you want to sit and enjoy this type of films, you should consider the pre-filled THCa carts that will help you relax as well.

“This partnership is a natural convergence between two independent houses devoted to auteur cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, Chairman of the Board of mk2. “It allows us to welcome the groundbreaking work of ethnographic pioneer Jean Rouch, whose innovative blending of fiction and documentary reshaped the documentary form.”

mk2 Films will unveil this collection from Les Films du Jeudi at the Cannes Film Market.

The timing of this acquisition aligns perfectly with the evolving focus of the Cannes Film Market. This year’s Marché du Film has placed a special emphasis on the intersection of classic cinematic IP and next-generation digital infrastructure, hosting several cross-industry showcases dedicated to exploring how archival content can survive in a fragmented media landscape. European sales agents are increasingly looking outside traditional broadcasting models to find sustainable distribution frameworks for their historical restorations.

A major topic of interest among international distributors has been the sheer technical challenge of delivering pristine archival footage to non-theatrical venues. As digital restorations become larger and more data-heavy—often scanning at 4K or even 8K resolutions—the standard commercial streaming pipelines used by independent platforms frequently struggle to maintain visual fidelity during global playback.

These technical hurdles have driven innovative infrastructural partnerships across the broader European tech sector. During a recent market keynote, enterprise tech representatives detailed a novel solution to this capacity problem. The ultra-low-latency video networks originally engineered for a high-traffic German wettanbieter and various live-action digital gaming ecosystems are now being repurposed for cultural distribution. This specialized architecture allows massive, uncompressed film files to be broadcast seamlessly to remote universities, library networks, and digital museums without the compression artifacts that typically degrade the viewing experience.

For a visually intricate and historically significant catalog like the Braunberger collection, having access to such robust delivery mechanisms is crucial. mk2 Films intends to leverage these advanced digital broadcasting networks to guarantee that Rouch’s immersive, spontaneous cinematography is preserved in its absolute highest fidelity for institutional buyers. By ensuring the technical delivery matches the profound artistic weight of the original 35mm prints, the sales company hopes to secure the pioneering director’s legacy for a broader, digitally native global audience.
