Launching sales in Berlin, mk2 Films is proud to continue its collaboration with Carla Simón following her Golden Bear-winning Alcarras. ROMERÍA is the director’s third feature and the concluding part of her family cycle. Simón once again draws from her own life, this time exploring a pivotal moment from her late adolescence.
ROMERÍA follows Marina, an 18-year-old woman, orphaned at a young age, travelling to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time and obtain their signature for a scholarship application. As she navigates this unfamiliar branch of her family, she is confronted with a past shaped by absence and long-buried emotions. What begins as a practical task soon becomes an emotional reckoning with a family history shaped by the painful void left by a generation lost to addiction and illness.
ROMERÍA is a cinematic journey into missing memories, merging Simón’s signature neorealism with subtle surrealism and exploring the emotional complexities of generational trauma and social stigma. The film also serves as a touching tribute to Simón’s parents, who both died of AIDS-related illnesses when she was very young.
The film’s evocative visuals will be brought to life through the lens of cinematographer Hélène Louvart (La Chimera, The Lost Daughter).
“Carla Simón’s ability to capture personal history with warmth and authenticity has made her one of the most exciting voices in contemporary cinema,” says Fionnuala Jamison, mk2 Films’ Managing Director. “With ROMERÍA, she brings her distinctive sensibility to a new chapter, delicately tracing the reverberations of love, loss, and the unspoken currents that shape every family’s story.”
A Spanish-German co-production, ROMERÍA is produced by María Zamora at Elastica Films (Spain) alongside, co-producers, Olimpia Pont-Cháfer at Ventall Cinema (Germany) and Àngels Masclans at DosSoles Media. Spanish distribution will be handled by Elastica Films. mk2 Films has a long-standing collaboration with Elastica Films, having worked together on acclaimed titles including Anatomy of a Fall, The Worst Person In The World, and Cow. mk2 Films will be sharing a promo and script with buyers in Berlin.
