Renowned Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada’s new film LOVE ON TRIAL delves into the high-stakes world of J-Pop, exploring the perilous intersection of personal freedom and societal expectations.
The story follows Mai a rising J-Pop idol whose big break is threatened when she falls in love, violating the “no love” clause in her contract. As her relationship is exposed, Mai finds herself entangled in a public trial, her life spiraling into chaos. Inspired by real cases in Japan where idols have been sued for violating “no relationship” contracts, Fukada’s film explores the harsh realities of fame and the fight for personal freedom.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Koji Fukada,” says Fionnuala Jamison, Managing Director of mk2 Films. “This poignant drama presents a candid portrayal of a young woman’s struggle against a dehumanizing social system. It provides a powerful commentary on the complexities of idol culture, personal freedom, and love, while highlighting the gender disparities and injustices that affect individuals, not only in Japan, but globally.”
LOVE ON TRIAL represents mk2 Films’ fourth collaboration with Fukada, following Love Life (Venice Competition 2022), Harmonium (Cannes UCR 2016), and A Girl Missing (Locarno & TIFF 2019). It also marks the first time that mk2 Films has worked with Toho, who will handle distribution in Japan. The film is produced by Japan’s Toho who produced Monster and Godzilla Minus One and Knockonwood, the banner that counts movies such as 37 Seconds and Spirit World amongst its credit, with France’s Survivance as co-producer. It is currently in post-production and will be ready for delivery in 2025.
