mk2 Films is currently undertaking the restoration and 4K digitization of the only film by Robert Bresson that had not yet been restored and digitized. This romantic drama has therefore been eagerly awaited by cinephiles around the world for many years.
Having been absent from screens worldwide since 1985, Four Nights of a Dreamer is set to make a return to global cinema theatres in 2024. Presented in Competition at Berlin in 1971 (Ecumenical Jury Prize), the tenth film by the influential director of Mouchette, Au Hasard Balthazar, and Pickpocket is regarded by cinephiles worldwide as his most personal work and arguably the most accessible.
An exhilarating and poetic variation on love, inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel White Nights and transposed into the magical current setting of Parisian nights, Four Nights of a Dreamer features a meeting on the Pont Neuf between a dreamy young man and a distraught young woman who will confide in each other over four nights.
Under the supervision of Mylène Bresson, Four Nights of a Dreamer is being restored by mk2 Films at Éclair Classics (Paris) and L.E. Diapason, with the support of the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC). The new 4K master will be available in spring.
“We would like to warmly thank Mylène Bresson for her entrusting us with the film rights and restoration work. It is wonderful when films by filmmakers of such stature become visible again to cinephiles across the world,” says Nathanaël Karmitz, mk2’s CEO.
Screenplay, dialogue, and adaptation by Robert Bresson. Starring Guillaume des Forêts, Isabelle Weingarten, Jean-Maurice Monnoyer. Cinematography by Pierre Lhomme. Set design by Pierre Charbonnier.
mk2 Films also represents the global rights to three other films by Robert Bresson: Pickpocket (1960, selected for Competition in Berlin), The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962, Special Jury Prize at Cannes), and Money (1983, Grand Prix for Creative Cinema at Cannes). In 2023, the Paris-based international film sales company notably represented Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall and won the Best Restored Film award at the Venice Film Festival for Shinji Somai’s Moving.
