20 sept 2019 Music Box Films acquires the darkly comic French drama SIBYL by director Justine Triet

Chicago, IL (09/18/19) – Music Box Films has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to SIBYL, the third film from director Justine Triet (In Bed with Victoria) starring Virginie Efira (An Impossible Love, Elle), Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is The Warmest Color), Gaspard Ulliel (Paris Je T’aime), and Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann). SIBYL premiered in competition in the 2019 Festival de Cannes and screened at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival as a Special Presentation. The film will see its U.S. premiere next month at the 57th New York Film Festival. Music Box plans a 2020 theatrical release followed by a release on home entertainment platforms.

SIBYL follows a jaded psychotherapist (Virginie Efira) returning to her first passion: writing. But her newest patient Margot (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a troubled up-and-coming actress, proves to be a source of inspiration that is far too tempting. Fascinated almost to the point of obsession, Sibyl becomes more and more involved in Margot’s tumultuous life, reviving volatile memories that bring her face to face with her past.

“A Russian doll of a film packed with stories within stories, SIBYL takes a hard look at the creative process, the unconscious mind, and the ways in which we can both create and destroy our own realities,” says Music Box Films’ President William Schopf. “This is a film that people are going to start talking about the second they leave the theater.”

“We are thrilled that SIBYL has found a U.S. home with Music Box,” said Fionnuala Jamison, Head of International Sales at MK2. “With SIBYL, Justine Triet has crafted a sharp and witty portrait of a woman’s psyche that will certainly resonate with American audiences.”

Music Box Films acquired all film rights in the United States and Canada; the deal was negotiated by Music Box Films’ President William Schopf and MK2’s Head of International Sales Fionnuala Jamison.
