“Chaplin is often referred to as the most important artist produced by the cinema.”
The Guardian
15 silent short films in slapstick produced in 1915 and restored in 2K.
The Essanay Collection marks an important phase in Charles Chaplin’s career as filmmaker. These short films showcase his transition from the fast-paced slapstick of Keystone productions to more character-driven comedies. At Essanay, Chaplin refined the Little Tramp’s character and experimented with new techniques that will become signature features of his later films: dance (SHANGHAIED), the equivocal ending (THE BANK), and the classic Chaplin fade-out (THE TRAMP). This collection offers glimpses of the emotional depth and innovative humour that would define his mature works.
Restoration in collaboration with the BFI, the Cineteca of Bologna, Blackhawk Films and Lobster Films.
