Witek is running after a train.From his banal event, Kieslowskiimagines the possible twists and turns in a young man’s life during the turbulant period of Poland in the 70’s. Version 1: Witek manages to get on the train, meets some hard-line communists and joins the Party. He realizes after the event that he was serving people who wanted merely to manipulate him… Version 2: As he runs after the train, his path is blocked by a ticket inspector. He struggles, breaks free and is arrested. He then comes across a militant for the opposition, and this marks the start of his life as a marginal dissident… Version 3: Witek misses the train, comes across a female student, goes back to studying medicine that he had wanted ti give up, gets married, and lives as a doctor, showing no interest in politics. He goes on a business trip and his plane explodes…
