06 sept 2021 BLAZE by Del Kathryn Barton boarded by mk2 films

mk2 films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Blaze”, art world sensation Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature starring Julia Savage and Simon Baker (Breath, The Devil Wears Prada, CBS’s The Mentalist).

Newcomer Savage stars as Blaze, a young teenager who is the sole witness to a shocking crime. Struggling to make sense of what she saw, she unleashes the wrath of her imaginary dragon.

Award-winning fine artist Del Kathryn Barton previously made the acclaimed short film The Nightingale and the Rose, using her lusciously illustrated and ornately imaginative style to adapt the Oscar Wilde story, with Mia Wasikowska and Geoffrey Rush voicing. Blaze is her much anticipated feature début, and will combine live action with VFX and stop-motion animation techniques.

“Del Kathryn Barton is such a visionary artist, whose unique style gives life to a radical and immersive modern fable. More relevant than ever, Blaze is an ode to women solidarity and courage, and we couldn’t be more proud to share Barton’s journey.” said Fionnuala Jamison, mk2 films’ Managing Director.

“Blaze” is being produced by Samantha Jennings of Australia’s Causeway Films, which credits include Jennifer Kent’s Venice Special Jury Prize winner The Nightingale and Sundance The Babadook. Currently in post-production, the film will be delivered in S1 2022.

mk2films will be presenting the film, produced with major production investment from Screen Australia and financed in association with Screen NSW, Fin Design and Spectrum Films. Bonsai Films will distribute in Australia and NZ.

Executive Producers Kristina Ceyton for Causeway Films, with Deanne Weir, Daniel Besen, Chris Plater, Sam Meers and Boris Tosic.

Director of Photography Jeremy Rouse, Production Design by Alex Holmes, Edited by Dany Cooper, Costume Design by Margot Wilson, Sound Design by Sam Petty and Co-Composers Sam Petty and Angel Olsen.
