The prosecutor Costa is entrusted with the investigation into the suspicious death of a’er in the valley of the Jiu, in modern-day Romania. Was it an accident or a crime? Costa is assisted in his inquiry by Alina, a beautiful young surveyor, and during the course of the investigations they fall madly in love. Meanwhile, two other’ers are found dead and mutilated in an abandoned gallery.
