NEW 4K

The 4K restoration of THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG was made from the original negative, scanned in immersion, in order to reduce the traces left by time on the film. The sound restoration was based on a three-track stereophonic mix of music and vocals found in the archives of Universal Music Publishing. Film restored in 4K by Ciné-Tamaris by the Éclair Classics and L.E. Diapason laboratories in Paris, under the supervision of Mathieu Demy and Rosalie Varda-Demy with the support of the CNC, CHANEL, and the Sacem.

THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is probably my favourite film.

If at some point we contact aliens, or they contact us and they want to know: What is this thing called Cinema? Can you explain it to us? And I had to pick one film to explain it to them, I would pick this film.”

It’s certainly the film that I’ve drawn the most emotion from my whole life. It coalesces all the arts – music, painting, dance, literature, poetry, all of them – into one single idea.”

It’s the most extraordinary movie watching experience I’ve ever had in my life.

It’s completely magical.”

It’s completely miraculous.”

It’s the greatest magic trick in movie history, and it’s never stopped inspiring me.”
