At first the character in the comics, Popeye appears for the first time on the big screen in 1931 and becomes the star of his own series two years later. The adventures of the famous sailor and eater of spinach, of his fiancée Olive and of his eternal rival Brutus, continued on television after its run at the cinema theatres and are up to over 450 episodes. In black and white until 1944, the production of the series went Technicolor when the Fleischer studio shut down.
