Marfa, a poor peasant woman who cannot afford a horse to plough her land, gets a job at the cooperative. The Kulaks try to sabotage it. But Marfa’s determination manages to overcome the reservations and prejudice of the other peasants. She also manages to thwart the traps set by the Kulaks and the bureaucrats’ reluctance to her. As a woman, she refuses to be the last person to be allowed to drive a tractor.
