Metropolis, in 2026, is a marvellous futuristic megalopolis organised according to a caste system. Workers toil in the underground city to ensure the happiness of those who live on the upper level — the free men in the city’s hanging gardens. Between the two tiers, technocrats oversee the proper functioning of the machines. But Maria, transformed into a robot, will lead the workers into revolt…

Set in a dazzling futuristic city the film depicts a society starkly divided: the privileged live above in towering skyscrapers, while the workers toil below in oppressive conditions. A visionary masterpiece by Fritz Lang, METROPOLIS remains one of the most influential and visually iconic films ever made. It is the very first film to be inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.
