Flanders at the middle of the 16th century, during the inquisition. The alchemist Sébastien Theus, whose real name is Zenon, secretely returns to Bruges, his city of birth. In spite of his powerful protectors, Zenon, who has been wanted for dissidence and subversive writings for a long time, is arrested, prosecuted and condemned. Determined to remain free, he chooses his own fate one night in February 1569.
