The archeologist Pierre Guérande and his young wife Denise’s happy and trouble-free couple is suddenly disrupted. Pierre hears a remark about the age difference between the two of them. Perplexed, he starts watching his wife, he becomes convinced she is having an affair with a young man, and decides to end his life. He is inspired by an Eastern tale: a deceived sultan dies by putting poison in one of his hookahs.
