ISLAND FISHERMEN

A film by Jacques De Baroncelli

1924 / France / 93’ / Noir & blanc / status : completed / long feature-film

Yann, a fisherman from Paimpol, is silently in love with Gaud, who loves him in return. His dangerous profession takes him away from Brittany for six months at a time. Proud and reserved, he has sworn to marry the sea and does not declare his love to Gaud. However, he promises his friend Sylvestre, Gaud’s brother, that he will marry her if he returns alive from the Tonkin War…

Masterpiece of silent cinema, loosely inspired by the eponymous novel by the 19th century academician Pierre Loti, a significant work of that era, restored for the first time with its original colour tones. Starring Charles Vanel and Sandra Milowanoff, the film celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2024.
