Syd, a young assistant editor at a prestigious photography magazine, meets Lucy
Berliner, a once-renowned photographer now living in seclusion. As Lucy’s career is
revived through their connection, the two women become involved in a passionate and
increasingly dangerous relationship, forcing Syd to confront unexpected choices.

Premiering at Sundance, Lisa Cholodenko’s HIGH ART marked a striking debut, offering an intimate and unsparing portrait of desire, ambition and artistic obsession within New York’s underground creative scene. Anchored by powerful performances from Ally Sheedy and Radha Mitchell, the film quickly established itself as a defining work of late-1990s American independent cinema, heralding the emergence of a filmmaker who would later direct THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT.

A celebrated landmark of queer cinema, newly restored in 4K, HIGH ART retains its raw emotional intensity and visual sophistication, reaffirming its status as a quietly influential film.

Press

«An elegant, witty, bittersweet lesbian romance set in Manhattan’s avant-garde photography world. Visually and verbally compelling, and the two leads are superb.»

The Guardian

«So perceptive and mature it makes similar films seem flippant. Masterful.»

Roger Ebert

«A highlight of the Sundance Festival.»
