FACES PLACES

A film by Agnès Varda, JR

documentary / France / titre original : VISAGES VILLAGES / 89’ / Couleur / statut : completed / French / Feature Documentary / International collections

Agnès Varda and JR have much in common: a passion for and questioning of images in general and, more specifically, the places and mechanisms for showing, sharing and exhibiting them.

Agnès chose cinema.

JR chose to create open-air photography galleries.

When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from the cities, travelling with JR’s photographic (and magical) truck. Whether through chance encounters or prepared projects, they reached out to others, listening to them, photographing them and sometimes displaying them.

The film also tells the story of their friendship, which grew over the course of the shoot, between surprises and teasing, laughing at their differences.
