1952 / France / Noir & blanc / status : completed / French / long feature-film

Marcel Pagnol’s diptych MANON OF THE SPRINGS and UGOLIN is a two-part cinematic story that explores themes of justice, revenge, and redemption in the Provençal countryside. MANON OF THE SPRINGS (1952) introduces the character of Manon, a shepherdess seeking retribution for her family’s mistreatment. UGOLIN (1952) continues the narrative, focusing on the life of Ugolin, a character entangled in the village’s tragic past. MANON OF THE SPRINGS and UGOLIN are probably the richest Provencal fresco painted by Marcel Pagnol. He started writing his script in 1950.The filming took place during summer 1952. Marcel Pagnol soon realised that he had more than four hours of screen time and decided to make two films. But the management of Gaumont had reservations and Marcel Pagnol finally let himself be convinced. Several scenes were cut to come to the final current version of the two films.
