At the 77th Cannes Films Festival, mk2 Films announces\u00a0three prestigious new acquisitions<\/strong>\u00a0and substantial investments in\u00a0new restorations<\/strong>, set against the backdrop of a strong presence at\u00a0Cannes Classics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

mk2 Films is honored to announce their collaboration with the Niki Charitable Art Foundation on the global rights (excluding the US*) for two films directed by artist Niki de Saint Phalle:\u00a0Un R\u00eave plus long que la nuit<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>(1976) and\u00a0Daddy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1973).\u00a0Un R\u00eave plus long que la nuit<\/em>\u00a0has been restored in 4K by L\u2019Immagine Ritrovata (Bologna-Paris) under the supervision of Arielle de Saint Phalle and with funding from Dior. It was presented at Bologna (Il Cinema Ritrovato), New York (NYFF) and the new Los Angeles Festival of Movies.\u00a0Daddy\u00a0<\/em>will soon be available in a restored version. mk2 Films is proud to present this unique feminist work by one of the great and popular visual artist of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

mk2 Films also announces the acquisition of global rights (excluding Japan, France) to\u00a0The Friends<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1994), a previously unreleased film by the award-winning Japanese director of Typhoon Club<\/em>, Shinji Somai, newly restored in 4K by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation. The director’s work, considered a major influence by Hirokazu Kore-eda and Ryusuke Hamaguchi, is being rediscovered by cinephiles worldwide\u2014another of Somai’s unreleased films, represented by mk2 Films,\u00a0Moving\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(1993), won the Best Restoration Award at the 2023 Venice Festival.<\/p>\n

mk2 Films has been very busy recently, acquiring film catalogues from Jacques Rozier, Raoul Peck, Marcel Pagnol (with an hommage coming up this Summer with a theatricla rerelease in France), and films restored by Martin Scorsese\u2019s Film Foundation under the World Cinema Project, and most recently, early films by Bruno Dumont, mk2 Films continues to permanently enrich its catalog of about 1,000 films by announcing an agreement with Theo Films to represent certain rights for the early feature films of French director Leos Carax:\u00a0Boy Meets Girl<\/em>\u00a0(1984, cinema, TV, and SVOD rights, France),\u00a0Mauvais Sang<\/em>\u00a0(1986, same rights as Boy Meets Girls<\/em>),\u00a0Les Amants du Pont Neuf<\/em>\u00a0(1991, world cinema and video rights), and\u00a0Holy Motors<\/em>\u00a0(cinema, TV, and VOD\/SVOD rights, France). mk2 Films also handles World right (exclunfing Japan, South Korea) to the omnibus film\u00a0Tokyo!<\/em>\u00a0(2008) co-directed by Leos Carax, Bong Joon-ho and Michel Gondry and produced by Comme des Cin\u00e9mas.<\/p>\n

The year 2024, marking the company\u2019s 50th anniversary, features a strong presence of mk2 Films at Cannes Classics:<\/p>\n

Robert Bresson’s\u00a0Four Nights of a Dreamer<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1971), unseen for decades and awaited by cinephiles worldwide, has been restored in 4K by mk2 Films under the supervision of Myl\u00e8ne Bresson at \u00c9clair Classics (Paris) and L.E. Diapason with support from the CNC. At Cannes, the restored film will be introduced by American director Paul Schrader, a great admirer of the French filmmaker’s work.<\/p>\n

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1964) by Jacques Demy returns to Cannes sixty years after its 1964 Palme d’Or, in a restored version. The masterpiece which launched Catherine Deneuve to stardom, scored by Michel Legrand, comes back with a new 4K restoration performed from the original negative, scanned in immersion to reduce the marks of time on the film. The sound restoration was carried out from a mix of music and voices on three tracks and in stereo, found in the archives of Universal Music France. The film was restored in 4K by Cin\u00e9-Tamaris, with support from the CNC, CHANEL, and SACEM, by the \u00c9clair Classics and L.E. Diapason laboratories in Paris, under the supervision of Rosalie Varda and Mathieu Demy.<\/p>\n

mk2 Films also distributes globally three documentaries presented in this year’s official selection:\u00a0Jacques Demy – The Pink and the Black<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Florence Platarets and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bonnaud, produced by Ex Nihilo, Cin\u00e9-Tamaris, Arte France and INA ;\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut: My Life, A Screenplay<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>by David Teboul (co-written with Serge Toubiana), produced by 10.7 Productionsand INA; and\u00a0Jacques Rozier: From One Wave to Another<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Emmanuel Barnault, co-produced by INA and mk2 Films.<\/p>\n

At Cannes, mk2 Films will also present to international buyers exclusive new images from Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut\u2019s\u00a0Shoot the Piano Player<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1960) in a new 4K UHD HDR version by Hiventy Transperfect with the support of CNC: on the occasion of the 40th anniversary in October 2024 of the disappearance of the leader of the Nouvelle Vague, mk2 Films has now restored all his feature films; and exclusive images of the new 4K restoration of\u00a0The End of Violence<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1997) by Oscar\u00ae-nominated Wim Wenders, starring Bill Pullman, Andie MacDowell, and Gabriel Byrne. The 4K restoration was made by Wim Wenders Stiftung and mk2 Films under the supervision of Wim Wenders, at L’Immagine Ritrovata\/ \u00c9clair Classics, Paris \u2013 Bologna with the support of the German Film Heritage Funding Program (FFE).<\/p>\n
