No\u00e9mie Merlant, the French actor of \u201cT\u00e1r<\/em>\u201d, is reteaming with Celine Sciamma, who directed her in \u201cPortrait of a Lady on Fire<\/em><\/a>\u201d, for her sophomore outing, \u201cThe Balconettes<\/em><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The fantastical comedy horror movie is being written by Merlant with the collaboration of C\u00e9line Sciamma. MK2 Films will launch sales at the Cannes Film Market. Filming is slated to begin this summer.<\/p>\n

Set in a boiling Marseille neighborhood plagued by a heat wave, the movie revolves around three roommates who gleefully meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their balcony. Until a late-night drink turns into a bloody affair. Sometimes gory, sometimes brazen, always playful. Merlant stars in the film alongside Souheila Yacoub (\u201cDune 2<\/em>\u201d) and Sanda Codreanu (\u201cMi Iubita Mon Amour<\/em>\u201d).<\/p>\n

Merlant, who won this year\u2019s Cesar Award for her role in Louis Garrel\u2019s \u201cThe Innocent<\/em>\u201d, made her feature debut as a director with \u201cMi Iubita Mon Amour<\/em>\u201d which played at Cannes, in the Special Screenings section, in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started writing (\u2018The Balconettes<\/em><\/a>\u2019), I would think about how women suffer and how we use our humour as a weapon. The story started to take the form of a comedy.\u00a0I wanted to create female characters that speak to me and who resemble those around me \u2013 to look at violence and victimisation,\u201d explained Merlant.<\/p>\n

She said she \u201cwanted to push the idea to the extreme and observe what it provokes, bringing in genre elements \u2013 fantasy and gore. I first discovered cinema through the Asian horror films that my sister and I would watch throughout our adolescence, it has been a major influence\u201d.<\/p>\n

Fionnuala Jamison, MK2 Films\u2019 managing director, said the company is \u201cthrilled to be working with No\u00e9mie again after \u201cPortrait of a Lady on Fire<\/em><\/a>\u201d. Penned and directed by Sciamma, the film starred Merland and Adele Haenel. It won best screenplay at Cannes and was nominated at the Golden Globes and BAFTA\u2019s, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe instantly fell in love with her bold and in-your-face foray into genre with \u2018The Balconettes<\/em><\/a>\u2019. It is wildly entertaining, almost farcical at times, and liberating with a vital feminist statement at its heart. We can\u2019t wait to share the script.\u201d said Jamison.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Balconettes<\/em><\/a>\u201d also reteams Merlant with producer Pierre\u00a0Guyard\u00a0at Nord-Ouest Films who had produced \u201cMi Iubita Mon Amour<\/em>\u201d. C\u00e9line Sciamma will serve as executive producer.<\/p>\n

MK2 Films will be at the\u00a0Cannes Film Festival\u00a0with nine films across different sections, including Justine Triet\u2019s \u201cAnatomy of a Fall<\/em><\/a>\u201d which is set to compete for a Palme d\u2019Or, and Lubna Playoust\u2019s \u201cRoom 999<\/em><\/a>\u201d which will play at Cannes Classics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
