Paris-based mk2 films has boarded Wei Shujun\u2019s\u00a0Only The River Flows<\/em><\/a>\u00a0following the film\u2019s\u00a0late addition to Cannes\u2019 Un Certain Regard Selection.<\/p>\n

The film, based on Yu Hua\u2019s short novel Mistakes By The River, follows a chief of police as he investigates a series of murders in a riverside town in rural China in the 1990s. Though an arrest is made quickly, clues push the policeman to delve deeper into the hidden behaviour of the locals and piece together the truth. The film stars Zhu Yilong as the police chief, following the actor\u2019s role in last year\u2019s Chinese box-office hit Lighting Up the Stars<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Only The River Flows<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is the third film from the Chinese director following\u00a0Striding Into The Wind<\/em>\u00a0(Cannes Label 2020) and\u00a0Ripples Of Life<\/em>\u00a0that screened in Directors\u2019 Fortnight in 2021. Zhang Yimou\u2019s\u00a0To Live<\/em>\u00a0was also an adaptation of Yu Hua\u2019s book of the same name and won multiple awards in Cannes in 1994.<\/p>\n

Only The River Flows<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the first feature produced by Hangzhou Dangdang Film alongside the director\u2019s production company KXKH FILM. The film is distributed in mainland China by Lian Ray Pictures and Ad Vitam will distribute the title in France.<\/p>\n

mk2 films\u2019 managing director Fionnuala Jamison said mk2 was \u201ctotally seduced by Wei Shujun\u2019s singular and acerbic vision,\u201d adding that \u201cwith his visual force and narrative skill, he has played with the detective genre in a very original way to create a film that scratches beneath the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n

mk2 heads into Cannes with several festival premiere titles including Justine Triet\u2019s\u00a0Anatomy Of A Fall<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in Competition and Un Certain Regard titles Molly Manning Walker\u2019s\u00a0How To Have Sex<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Felipe Galvez\u2019\u00a0The Settlers<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and Monia Chokri\u2019s\u00a0The Nature Of Love<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
